Narodowy Bank Polski (NBP)
The central bank of Poland is the NBP, also known as the Narodowy Bank Polski or National Bank of Poland.
The main objective of the NBP is to maintain price stability, or a moderate inflation, in the republic of Poland. For an overview of current CPI inflation in Poland, click here. For current inflation in Poland based upon HICP, click here. The main tasks of the Polish central bank are:
- the NBP is an issuing bank: has the exclusive right to issue money;
- to maintain full employment;
- the NBP acts as a bank for commercial banks: the bank is responsible for the stability and safety of the Polish banking system;
- the NBP is a central bank for the government, it offers banking services tt the Polish government.
NBP reference rate
When reference is made to the Polish interest rate this often refers to the NBP reference rate. The NBP reference rate is a base rate. The central bank is determining the inflation level objective and uses the NBP reference rate as a tool to achieve this objective. Increasing or decreasing the reference rate the central bank of Poland is trying to influence the short term interest rates in the money market. This has a direct effect on the interest rates of products like a mortgage, loan / credit or savings account.
