Eonia (Euro OverNight Index Average) is the average interest rate at which a selection of European banks lend one another funds denominated in euros whereby the loans have a maturity of 1 day. Eonia can thereby be viewed as the overnight Euribor rate. This page shows a summary of the current and historic Eonia interest rates.
Alongside the 1 day rate we have another 15 Euribor interest rates with different maturities (see the links at the bottom of this page). The very short maturity means that the Eonia interest rate is mainly used in the professional financial markets. Most private individuals are not familiar with the rate. This unlike the Euribor interest rates, which are closely followed by many private individuals. This is linked to the fact that the Euribor rates are used by banks when setting the interest rate on products such as mortgages and savings accounts.
